What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is yoga’s science. The Sanskrit word, AYUR - or ‘life’ and VEDA – or ‘knowledge’ AYURVEDA, quite literally means the knowledge of life. Ayurveda is India’s traditional system of healing and health - possibly humankind’s most ancient medical system that has been practiced for thousands of years.

Ayurveda looks at ALL aspects of our life, not just our body.It takes into consideration physical, mental, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, behavioral, environmental, nutritional, familial, social, etc., factors that affect us daily. This is unique to Ayurveda in that it looks at everything that is happening in your world to find out what might be throwing you off balance.

Despite it being more than 5,000 years old it couldn’t be more relevant to our modern, busy and stressful lives. With cases of chronic conditions such as anxiety, depression, arthritis, IBS, psoriasis, eczema, infertility, menopause symptoms at an all time high, in Ayurveda we have a natural, gentle and effective support. “It depends,” is Ayurveda’s foundation and it all depends on YOU. You, meaning your individuality, your unique makeup. This unique make up consists of 3 energies called doshas which are made up of the 5 great elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth). Simply, when doshas are out of balance, we get dis-ease. So depending on what dosha(s) are most dominant in your body, that will determine how you maintain your health.

The unique combination of these elements come together to make up the doshas or constitutions—vata, pitta, and kapha. Each dosha has a number of corresponding qualities that are expressed in the different aspects of our being such as physical, emotional, and mental. All of us have some aspects of each dosha, but one or two doshas tend to dominate, informing everything from our digestion to our emotions to our overall sense of health and well being.
